Hey Coach Darren Vol. 26

Hi there,

Welcome back to ‘Hey Coach Darren’ – the advice column where I’ll be sharing my top three tips on a different topic each week, inspired by real-life scenarios from our current members (and you)!

There are no substitutes for regular exercise and eating whole, nutrient-rich foods. But sometimes, be it due to busy lives, dietary deficiencies, or simply the demands of aging, supplements and vitamins can be valuable allies in our quest for better health.

Just like exercise and good nutrition too, supplements aren’t always the easiest thing to figure out exactly how to do/use to help you live healthily! This FitTRAC member felt the same, so they asked about what, if any, types of supplements or vitamins would be helpful to them in their quest of healthy living:

“Hey Coach Darren, I’ve been on a fitness journey for a while now, and I currently take a daily multivitamin, which I know is good (my doctor agreed). But I’ve also heard about other supplements that might help with weight loss and, more importantly, overall health.

I’ve read about protein powders, fish oil, probiotics, and a slew of others, but I’m not sure which ones are right for me. And with so many options out there, it’s a bit overwhelming. Also I’ve been noticing that as I get older, it’s becoming increasingly challenging to maintain my energy levels, so I want to ensure I’m giving my body the best support it needs to stay in good shape.

Can you provide guidance on any supplements that can support my weight loss goals and health?”

Taking a daily multivitamin is a great start! That is a solid foundation because it ensures you’re getting essential vitamins and minerals your body needs. Beyond that, in short, supplements can be useful, but not always necessary. Here are the tips I shared to this member:

  1. Understanding supplements’ role and ensuring their healthy use: The first thing to understand about all supplements is that they are meant to complement, not replace, a balanced diet rich in whole foods. No supplement is a magic bullet – regular exercise and a mindful, balanced diet are always going to be the foundation of your success.

Second, always consult your healthcare provider before adding new supplements, especially if you have underlying health conditions or take medications. It is also good to ask your healthcare provide about reputable brands with independent testing for purity and quality if you do begin taking any supplements.

  2. The core supplements (good for a lot of people): If you’re aiming for weight loss, protein supplementation can be your best friend. It helps you feel full and preserves lean muscle mass, which is crucial during weight loss. Consider adding a high-quality protein powder to your routine. You can blend it into smoothies or mix it with water for a convenient and satisfying snack or meal replacement. And there are options for all types of nutritional preferences like whey, egg, pea, and brown rice.

Another supplement that can provide a great benefit to your heart and overall health are Omega-3 fatty acids. They reduce inflammation, improve insulin sensitivity, and promote fat loss. Adding a fish oil supplement to your regimen could be beneficial (but always consult your healthcare provider first).

Fiber can be handy to fight against overeating and is a key player in digestive health. While getting fiber from whole foods is ideal, a fiber supplement can be handy on days when you’re falling short on your fiber intake. It keeps you satisfied and supports balanced blood sugar levels.

  3. Take a gradual and consistent approach: When introducing new supplements or vitamins into your routine, take a gradual and consistent approach. Start with one supplement at a time to monitor its effects on your body. Keep a journal to note any changes in energy levels, mood, or overall well-being.

This allows you to pinpoint which supplements work best for you and adjust your regimen accordingly. Remember, consistency is key in realizing the full potential of these supplements, so make them a part of your daily routine for the best results.

Remember, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to supplements. What works for one person may not work for another. Your journey is unique, and the best approach is tailored to your specific needs and goals. And while supplements can be helpful, they’re most effective when combined with a balanced diet and regular exercise. So, keep up the good work on both fronts!
